But with some reflection, I thought: it was more of the way I was perceiving it. Instead of the rug being pulled out from underneath me, I decided to look at it as more like being pushed out of the nest. So that was where the sparrow came from.”</image:caption>

I found a Catholic church in Huntington Beach, and every morning before I go to work, I try to find strength; I go into the sanctuary . . . and sit for an hour before I go to work. <image:caption>Wally returned to his namesake’s roots for a time. After college, he got a job at Leo Burnett, a top advertising agency based in the Windy City. He worked on the Marlboro Man campaign. He met his wife. But after seven years, he moved back to his family’s farm.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Wally - “The legend there is that my mom just kind of threw some pumpkin seeds out in the field. She thought it would be fun to have some pumpkins for me and my younger brother . . . and she just stuck all the extra pumpkins that showed up around that scarecrow out there with some overalls on—to just get rid of the pumpkins. People started stuffing money in his overalls, and it grew into this.”</image:title>

And I brought my little kids here. And now they have grown up and gotten married, and they’re bringing their kids here.’ And I just get a kick out of that.”</image:title>

<image:caption>She chose her shop’s unique name for two reasons: “When I was working towards building it, I was 49 going on 50, so . . . I was feeling a little bit tarnished in life, you know? I have a little more age on me, a little more time on me. . . . And then my husband; he’s a plumber. He works with copper pipe and stuff. . . . He pulls out the old pipe to put in new—and that’s just the job and obviously necessary—but I would always look at that pipe and be like, ‘Oh, that’s so beautiful. That’s a leap that’s coming up, but that was a long time in the making.” Revati couldn’t tell you her favorite book, but she loved the last one she read: Katabasis by R.F. Kuang. She enjoys meeting people in the store and bonding over shared passions. She leads “Queer and Loathing,” one of the shop’s four book clubs.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stories - JD</image:title>
<image:caption>“The story of the koi fish in Japanese tattoo lore is that it swims upstream and turns into a dragon. So it’s got a lot of the same symbolism as, like, a phoenix sort of thing. . . . It was my first visible tattoo, like if I’m wearing a T-shirt or something. It’s a lot more common now to have sleeves and stuff like that, but at the time, mostly just tattoo artists or people who were really into it had them. So when I did that it was kinda like: ‘This is what I’m gonna do. I’m gonna be a tattoo artist. This is cementing it.’ But, you know, as far as my dad was concerned, I couldn’t get a job now cause I had visible tattoos.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - JD - A year later, JD got a call from his dad. “He leaves a voice message and was just like, ‘Hey, just wanted to see if I could get on your books for a tattoo.’ And I was just like, ‘What?’ And before I could even call him back, he requested an appointment through our online booking system.” His dad chose to get a clipper ship that JD had drawn. On his arm. Almost a half sleeve in size.</image:title>
